 RESIDENCY TRAINING IN LABORATORY ANIMAL MEDICINE
The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM), Louisiana State University (LSU) and the Tulane National Primate Research Center (TNPRC), Tulane University Health Sciences Center, have one 2-year residency training position available to start July 1, 2008. The program is accredited by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) and provides for a full time resident position at the TNPRC.
The training program is focused to provide detailed training in clinical medicine and surgery for nonhuman primates in the environment of a biomedical research program. Residents are required to design and act as the principal investigator for a small research study focused on clinical medicine, surgery or NHP behavior. The successful applicant will spend three months per year at the LSU-SVM in Baton Rouge, LA, rotating through two vivaria covering a broad range of species and nine months per year at the TNPRC in Covington, LA, concentrating on nonhuman primates. Additionally, training includes a weekly seminar, slide review, case presentation, instruction of veterinary students, facility management; and diagnostic pathology at the LSU SVM. Emphasis is on preparation for board certification by ACLAM. Opportunities exist for subsequent doctoral level training at the TNPRC.
Applicants must possess DVM or equivalent degree and a license to practice in at least one state within the US. Starting salary is based on the NIH scale for post doctoral students and is $36,996 for candidates with no experience and increases with experience.
